Moles can cause a lot of damage to lawns and gardens if left unchecked. They don't mean any harm in it, but the upturned soil and damaged plants are still a hassle to fix. While mole prevention is a great way to keep the moles off your property, they may not be entirely effective. When that happens, trapping the moles to stop their digging might be the best course of action. There are several kinds of traps on the market, some better than others.

Live Traps

Live trapping of moles is generally pretty simple. The first step, as with any trap, is to find the tunnels. Starting from the mounds will usually help you find them, presuming you don't accidentally step in one and find it the hard way. To live trap moles, simply bury a bucket along one of the tunnels. The moles will fall into the bucket, so make sure you cover it with easy to remove materials and check it daily.

Spring Traps

For a more aggressive solution, spring traps can be used. Just make sure that pets or kids can't accidently set them off themselves. Spring traps are generally considered one of the more effective traps on the market, but they're not the only ones. They do tend to be one of the simpler to use, though. CINCH traps are one of the most trusted brands in the spring trap field and are pretty easy to use. Simply place the traps in the tunnel below a mole mound, set the yellow flag that comes with the trap, and wait. They come in different sizes because they can also be used on gophers, so make sure you get the right size.

Pincer Traps

Pincer traps work in a similar manner to spring traps, they just rely on a different kind of mechanism. As the name implies, they pinch rather than spring. Both types can be highly effective, but it's worth noting that most spring traps can be used at deeper levels as well as the surface tunnels. Pincer traps are generally designed more for the deeper tunnels.

Whatever trap method you decide to use, make sure to follow the instructions carefully so that you know they're set properly. If, after a few days, they don't activate, then move them around until you grab your mole. Keep an eye on the tunnels and mounds as well so you know where they are for more successful catching.
