Moles, being burrowers, aren't too fussy where they dig as long as the soil is soft and food plentiful. This means they don't care if their tunnels wreck your lawn or garden. To keep moles at bay, you may want to try mole repellents. There are quite a few on the market, but unfortunately, success is usually limited at best.

Ultrasonic Power

These repellents use the power of science to create powerful low-frequency waves through the ground. The theory is that these sound waves annoy the moles and drive them away. As far as repellents go, these are usually one of the more effective kinds. Just be sure to check product reviews and buy solar-powered versions to avoid battery costs. Also, it's worth noting the limited range such devices generally protect.

Natural Repellents

Various foul-smelling oils, sprays, and pellets are often marketed as repellents for moles and rodents. Castor oil is usually touted for repelling moles, but unless you saturate your entire garden with the stuff, it's unlikely to work. It doesn't matter how sensitive a mole's sense of smell is if the repellent gets lost in the wind.

Chemical Repellents

Like natural repellents, chemical variants play on the mole's sensitive sense of smell to try and keep them away. They also have the same problem as the natural repellents in that they rely on smell to protect an entire lawn and garden. Granted, with either method you might be able to achieve limited success by tossing granulated repellent into the mole tunnels. The problem with that is if you have tunnels, it means the moles are already well situated, and at that point, short of saturating your lawn with repellent, it won't keep the moles away for long.

Mole repellents are generally of limited effectiveness due to their short range and duration, as well as the added factor that moles rarely come above ground. Ultrasonic devices are marginally more effective, but in general, prevention is better than repellents. Using barriers they can't tunnel through will do more than turning your lawn into an ultrasonic minefield, and it's a lot easier to maintain.

Unfortunately, mole repellents just aren't that effective. Outside conditions do not lend well to such methods of keeping animals away, at least not on scales that don't also damage the environment. That's why barriers and traps are more effective methods for keeping the moles out of the vegetable garden and flower beds.
